Child Labor By Maryam Jilani

My childhood innocence… Her childhood maturity…

My bright eyes… Her disappointed eyes…

My dreams fulfilled… Her dreams scattered…

My crying and yelling heard loudly… Her silent, unshed tears…

My wishes and ambitions expressed… Her wishes and ambitions unnoticed…

The softness of my hands… The roughness of her skin…

Me as a child-with-brand-new toy… She as a child-care-taker of kids like me…

I go to school for learning as other kids… She goes for work as a grown-up…

Me, seen with my dolls everywhere I go… She, seen with a broom everywhere she goes..

I, restless and sleepless in a comfortable bed… She, relaxed and sleepy on the floor…

I, ungrateful with luxuries of life… She, grateful without even necessities of life…

“Me, with a life that is a bed of roses…”

“She, with a life that is not a bed of roses…”
