“ Eat to Live ” or “ Live to Eat ”
“LIVE TO EAT” The topic seems confusing right? Some of you must be wondering that its one and the same thing while others may be interpreting it in different contexts based on one’s perspective.
I would first like to start with the meanings of these two terms in my opinion. The term “EAT TO LIVE “means we eat because we need to survive in this world.Food is our basic necessity, it gives us the energy to perform our daily work activities as well as our bodily functions. Therefore, we eat in order to live and survive.
“LIVE TO EAT” on the other hand is the term which doesn’t serve the biological purpose of humans but is beyond this and it includes social, emotional as well as psychological factors as well. One don’t only eat to survive but to acquaint oneself with the worldly pleasures in general they eat because it gives them pleasure, joy, happiness, and for some it may be a symbol of high status and overall it is the self-actualization point for some .
“EAT TO LIVE ” is a common phenomenon that any human body needs despite the caste, creed, gender, or religion etc. It helps in reducing starvation and keeps a person healthy and active as well. However, sometimes you may also want to party, have fun and luxury in your life for which you may go to a luxurious high-class restaurant, or you order a yummy pizza, or you may also arrange a BBQ at your place etc right?
But would this come under the term “Live to Eat” ?.The answer is NO because entertainment and joy are the part of your life and you cannot ignore it. However, if you persistently do this, meaning that you’re living just to eat .It is as if your sole purpose of life is to eat, eat and just to eat hence, you are alive as if there is no tomorrow and eat consistently. This is the extreme version of people with this type of mentality and excess of everything is bad in my viewpoint because the money you spend on all these luxurious dishes to eat could be spent on those in need especially in countries like Pakistan with a huge ratio of poverty and malnutrition .
Therefore, the best approach is to be moderate and balanced in life i.e.you should eat in order to live and it is fine if you sometimes eat out of this need for survival however, if you consistently go beyond this phenomenon of “Eat to Live” then you are not only harming your life by excessive intakes of worldly pleasures but you are harming the poor and the needy ones too as your doing this at their expense. As Muslims, our religion Islam also prohibits anything that does harm to others and gain of one party at the expense of others. Therefore, harm either directly or indirectly shouldn’t be inflicted upon others at any cost. In fact, the waste of this money could be invested in something that contributes positively to the welfare of the society.Share
