Education suffers in Rawalpindi despite political bigwigs: Alif Ailaan

Alif Ailaan has organized its first intervention meeting in Rawalpindi on Wednesday, September 9, 2015.

According to Alif Ailaan’s education rankings, Rawalpindi is the top performing district in Punjab and Pakistan. The participants agreed that despite its top ranking there is a lot to be achieved in terms of provision of quality education in Rawalpindi.

The activists from Alif Ailaan discussed the state of education in the district with the local politicians and members of media and also shared information that could help understand the problems and their solutions.

It was pointed out during the discussion that there are at least 19 schools in Rawalpindi city that are either illegally occupied by land mafia or other people.

26% schools do not have lavatory facilities, 25% have no electricity and 17% have no boundary walls.

In Class 5, 24% children cannot read a Class 2 story in Urdu; 26% cannot read a Class 2 story in English; and 46% cannot do two digit division.

The participants were of the opinion that being the constituency of many political bigwigs like Sheikh Rashid, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Imran Khan, Hanif Abbasi and Engineer Qamar-ul-Islam has done a disservice to the district because no one owns its problems.

The performance of education system goes down as one moves from north to south in the Punjab province.

The bottom five districts on Alif Ailaan’s district rankings are located in south Punjab – Rajanpur, DG Khan, Muzaffargarh, Bahawalpur and Rahim Yar Khan.
