We all connect the word Hijab to a piece of clothing that covers a girl’s head. But is Hijab merely just that? No it is not! Hijab is much more than just a piece of clothing.

Hijab is the way you walk, the way you talk, the way you perceive and even the way you think. Hijab is a way of life. Hijab covers a lot of aspects.

Hijab of Clothes:

When it comes to clothes, a piece of fabric on your head is just not enough. You can’t wear skinny jeans and a tight-fitting t-shirt and call it Hijab just because you have your head covered.

As the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said:

“In later (generations) of my ummah there will be women who will be dressed but naked. On top of their heads (what looks) like camel humps. They will not enter into paradise or (even) get a smell of it.” (Muslim)

Wearing attractive clothes, e.g. clothes that sparkle or have attention seeking or bright colors,  and covering your head does not make it Hijab either.

Allah tells us:

“And stay in your houses, and do not display yourselves like that of the times of ignorance…” [al-Ahzaab:32]

Perfumes that attract attention of a Non-Mahram is also against the principles of Hijab. Anything that can attract attention from Non-Mahram is not Hijab and simply covering one’s head doesn’t make it Hijab either.

Hijab of Sight (and behavior):

Staring at someone or “checking them out” while wearing a head cover, not only exclude it from Hijab, but is wrong on so many levels as it disgraces the idea of Hijab itself.

Same goes for talking freely, joking around and laughing with the Non-Mahrams.

Allah says:

” …then be not soft in speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease should be moved with desire, but speak in an honorable manner.” [al-Ahzaab:32]

So one should talk to them when there is a specific need, and in a manner that is not necessarily rude, yet it is polite but firm.

Hijab for Men:

Yes, Hijab is not only for women, but also for men. If a women is not to attract the attention of Non-Mahram men, then a man is also not to attract the attention of Non-Mahram women.

Allah states in the Holy Qur’an:

“Tell the believing men to cast down their looks and guard their private parts; that is purer for them; surely Allah is Aware of what they do. And tell the believing women that they cast down their looks and guard their private parts and do not display their ornaments except what appears thereof….” (24:30-31)

If you paid attention, you’d know how Allah mentioned the men first and ordered them to lower their gaze before telling women to cover themselves.

If you want to complete the beautiful obligation of Hijab, kindly do it properly and completely.
