Muhammad Amir – The Cricketer

People who said that there would be never be another bowler like Wasim Akram were rudely jolted when a Akram like avatar emerged in the form of Mohammad Amir. .  Amir, then 15 years old, went on a tour of England with the Pakistan U-19 cricket team and was one of the leading bowlers. He made his first-class debut in 2007, and his first One-Day International and Test appearance in 2009 in Sri Lanka, at the age of 17. However, he played his first international match during the 2009 ICC World Twenty, where he played in every game, helping the national side win the tournament.

Early Life of the cricketer

Mohammad Amir was born on 13th April 1992 in the remote village of Gujar Khan, Punjab. He was the second youngest of seven children and was born in a Kotla tribe of Gujjar family. From a young age, he played street cricket, often trying to emulate his hero, Wasim Akram. He was quoted as saying, “Wasim Akram is my favorite, he’s my idol. When I used to watch him on TV, I would try to see what exactly he was doing with the ball. Then I would go outside and imitate his actions and bowling.”

In 2003, at the age of 11, Amir was spotted at a local tournament and invited to join the sports academy in Rawalpindi After joining the national team, Amir moved to Lahore with his family to be closer to top-flight cricket facilities. Amir married British citizen Narjis Khatoon in Sep 2014.

1: One Day International career

He impressed the Pakistan cricket team, including Wasim Akram, who took credit for discovering Amir.

Amir made his One Day International match debut against Sri Lanka taking 3 wickets at an economy rate of 4.50 and also scoring 23 runs. -On 9 November 2009 he scored 73 runs against New Zealand which is a record for a number 10 batsman. With his batting partner Saeed Ajmal, Amir added 103 runs to Pakistan’s chase, only to fall short by 7 runs.

In One Day International cricket and putting on a 103 runs, 10th wicket partnership with Saeed Ajmal. He was unable to get his side to their victory target of 212 runs, as Ajmal was declare out in the last over and Pakistan lost by just 7 runs.

Test career

After his successful 2009 T20 World Cup tournament, Amir was selected in the test squad for Pakistan for the series in Sri Lanka. He was chosen alongside fast bowler Umar Gul and Abdur Rauf. He started his Test career well, taking six wickets in the match. However he did not get any wickets in his next two Test matches. His next test wickets came in New Zealand where he managed to take four wickets in the first Test match, during a losing game. He won his first Test match with the Pakistan team during his 5th Test match, as Pakistan won comprehensively by 141 runs, he managed to take three wickets in the match including the wicket of Ross Taylor, who scored 97 runs in the second innings. He shone brightly with the bat as well and showed a solid technique for a lower order batsman.

In the summer of 2010, Amir was awarded with man of the match award for becoming the youngest player to ever take a five-wicket haul in England. He also became the youngest player to take 50 test wickets earning praise from several former international cricketers. In that eventful series against England, he took 19 wickets, the highest of the Pakistanis and third highest overall at an outstanding average of 18.3. He also took 2 five-wicket hauls.

2010 ICC World Twenty20

In the initial stages of the  World Cup 2010 , Amir took three wickets in a five wicket-maiden over in a Twenty20 International match against Australia. The other two men were run out in the same over. This set a world record of three wickets for a bowler in Twenty20 and 5 wickets for a team in one over.

Pakistan Super League

In 2016, Muhammad Amir  played PSL  for karachi kings, in which amir took hat-trick and overcome lahori Qalandar team  but unfortunately Karachi kings could not win the finals and Islamabad United took the show.

Most Importantly,  as Amir cannot change the past but he can start a new brighter career by setting small goals on initial stages. He has recently taken more than 90 wickets in first class matches after his return to the cricket. Team has good wishes for him and hoping that he will continue with such performance and will shut the mouths of unfair taunters.

Muhammad Amir’s Allegation:

On August 29, 2010, he was implicated in allegations of spot-fixing and is currently serving a five-year ban for allegedly bowling two-deliberate no-balls, Amir however has announced that he plans to appeal the verdict handed out by his prosecutor the International Cricket Council.

The Pakistan cricket spot-fixing scandal of 2010 centres on certain members of Pakistan’s national cricket team being convicted of taking bribes from a bookmaker, Mazhar Majeed , to under-perform deliberately at certain times in a Test match at Lord’s Cricket Ground,  London, in 2010.

Undercover reporters from News of the World  secretly videotaped Mazhar Majeed accepting money and informing the reporters that fast bowlers Asif and Amir would deliberately bowl no balls at specific points in an over. This information could be used by gamblers to place bets with inside information .  In response to these allegations, Scotland yard arrested Majeed one charge of match fixing. The International Cricket Council  banned three players—Salman butt, Muhammad Asif and Mohammad Amir —for terms of between 5 and 10 years. In November 2011, Butt and Asif were found guilty by a London court on criminal charges relating to spot-fixing. Amir and Majeed had entered guilty pleas on the same charges. All four were given prison sentences, ranging from six months to 32 months.

The ban period also saw Amir spend quality time at home with his family, something he had never done. Having left home very early in life to train at the residential academy at Rawalpindi, the pacer was finally with his parents and siblings.

In conclusion  come back of Muhammad amir after  5 years has increased the viewers expectations as he has improved his bowling and surely he will give surprises due to his swings style in bowling . Amir’s life has many layers. It’s a heart-breaking tale of boy who threw it away and picked it up again

Nation is expecting a lot out of him. As his  5 years of allegation was quiet intense and disturbing for him and unacceptable to his fans now he has amended  his attitude and style towards the game which he promises to give out best outcome and win matches. Let’s hope for the best for Muhammad Amir  and pray for his health and success.
