WCE: Hope Sustains the World! by M. Numan Saeed

What is life? Has it any purpose? Does man live for himself alone? These are important questions, and wise men of every age have tried to find answers to them.

Man is a rational and moral being. He possesses the power of thinking, implementing and improving his behavior. Civilization is not the creation of idlers but of idealists who have the courage to dream and work to realize their dreams.

Every man has a goal in his life. He needs to struggle, work hard and even sometimes burn the mid-night oil to achieve that goal. Struggle is the secret of man’s progress.

It is not necessary we always get what we want. It has been pointed out that failures are the inevitable lot of men. But it should be borne in mind that failures should never discourage us. It is only weak-minded men who lose all energy and feel dejected whenever failure overtakes them. One, who is endowed with firm determination and hope, however feels no disappointment. On the contrary the more he meets with failures the more determined he becomes, till by dint of the firmness of his mind, he achieves his goal.

A person who fails is a person who hopes. It is well said by Bernard Shaw, “He who has never hoped can never despair”. We do fail in the process, but it is hope that makes us try again and again until or unless we succeed. There is a famous Arabian Proverb “He who has health, has hope; and he who has hope, has everything”. So, as far as we have hope, we are pretty much in the contest of achieving a goal. The history of Robert Bruce is an instance in point. He made six attempts to win the freedom of Scotland, but every time he failed. He neither yields nor lost hope, however, and in the next attempt that he made was he successful.

We can infer from an example, without fear of contradiction that the man who possesses a resolute will and hope is sure to overcome dangers and difficulties and achieve a goal. Another well said by Thomas Fuller “Great hopes make great men”.

It is clear that life in not a bed of roses, nor is it an unending series of misfortunes, life is a struggle, a continuous struggle and a hope, one undertakes to realize one’s potential. Hope is a gift, not a burden; an exercise in companionship, not a lonely journey. We are alive as far as we have hope in us. It is rightly said, “Hope sustains the world”.
